Bagels at Alcatraz

We’re all on a mission to cut our spending these days but it’s still irresistibly lovely heading out to grab a bite to eat, especially if you’re here on your holidays. That’s why we’ve created this monthly slot to celebrate a great plate you can enjoy for less than a tenner. This month, we headed up the steps to Alcatraz to check out their bagels. Perched on the cliffside just as you reach the beach, this aptly named little cafe is a great spot for daytime coffees and sundowner cocktails.

Their food menu is kept deliberately compact, as they have limited space in which to work. But goodness, do they make valuable use of every inch.

Choose from mozzarella and prosciutto, smashed avocado and feta, or ham and chilli jam. We opted for the latter two. Have you had avocado and feta before? Absolute game changer. With a squeeze of lime and a scattering of chilli flakes, it’s a solid flavour combo that’s earthy and fresh.

The ham bagel comes with a generous smear of Cornish chilli jam to add a subtle kick and some sweetness. Smoked cheddar, beef tomato and rocket help pack things out. The fillings are generous as the pics show, plus each serving comes with a decent handful of crisps for on-the-side crunch. Go on, stick some inside the bread. You know you want to.

Bagels served 11am-4pm daily. Good breakfast options from 9.30-11am too.
